my MUSIC
For a long time now, I've been fascinated by resonance and the psychoacoustic experience of spaces and rooms, and the problem of how to make music and art that deals with these phenomena. This is sometimes a technical problem (how do I play the guitar, an instrument that normally has a quick decay, in a way that allows me to explore long tones?) and sometimes an aesthetic one (how do I represent or recreate a subjective experience of resonance for other people?).
These days I like to explore this via electroacoustic guitar in solo and small group improvised settings. An album of music with Dominic Coles and Eric Wong should come out before too long.
In ways that I have trouble explaining, my exploration of psychoacoustic phenomena led to a study of just intonation and eventually brought me back to early experiences with folk music, oral traditions, and the Highland bagpipes, and a longtime interest in music from non-Western cultures. Colliding with a parallel exploration of language in music, this has recently come to light in the form of Church Car, a collaboration with my old friend Big Daddy Mugglestone. An album and live shows are forthcoming; in the meantime, here is a video for the song (church of).
MUSIC on record
Story Destroyer, a collaboration with sound artist/writer Pär Thörn.
Stubborn Plane, improvisations with percussionist Leo Suarez.
Three Fate Tales, works for electric guitar and edited/processed field recordings.
An untitled album of controlled long tone improvisations with saxophonist Paul Roth.
Audio documentation of "Big Sine," a site-specific sound installation realized at ausland, Berlin.
other people's MUSIC
I play guitar in David First's Western Enisphere ensemble, and had the great pleasure of working on his album The Consummation of Right and Wrong. Revolutions is forthcoming on Mode Records; a livestream of its premier performance can be viewed here.
I played guitar on Big Daddy Mugglestone's album Hangman & the Rainmaker.
I played bass guitar in Gold Dime, appearing on the albums No More Blue Skies and My House.
SOUND design
I do sound design for theater, dance, and performance, including work with dancer/choreographer Moriah Evans (Remains Persist), algorithmic theater maker Annie Dorsen (Prometheus Firebringer, Yesterday Tomorrow, The Slow Room), movement artist Lauren Bakst (More Problems with Form; After Summer, or Not in the Kitchen), and Missy Mazzoli (associate sound design for The Listeners at Opera Philadelphia).
AUDIO work
I do live sound with an emphasis on experimental and improvised music. I work regularly at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn and have worked with flutist Claire Chase on, inter alia, her realization of Terry Riley's The Holy Liftoff. From 2010 to 2016 I was the sound person at ausland, Berlin and from 2022 to 2023 was the technical director at Shift in Brooklyn.
I also record and mix audio. Some highlights include:
